The museum officially opened to the public on 2 May 1872 as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Bombay.

In 1975, the museum was renamed in honor of Dr. Bhau Daji Lad, a renowned physician, historian, philanthropist, and one of the key figures responsible for its establishment.

After decades of deterioration, the museum underwent an extensive restoration project led by INTACH and the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. The restoration won the prestigious UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award of Excellence in 2005, and the museum reopened in 2008.
