Sneha Waykar from Mumbai displayed her skill in Chessboxing by winning 3 medals at World stage. The 5th World ChessBoxing Championship recently took place in the picturesque town of Riccione, Italy, from October 28th to November 2nd, 2023. Athletes from five continents and a total of 16 countries came together to showcase their prowess in this unique combination of chess and boxing. The event promised to be a global highlight for the sport of chessboxing.

Bragged 1 Gold & 2 Silver medals

One standout performer was Sneha Sanjay Waykar, who clinched the silver medal in the 55kg main ChessBoxing event. Her journey to the podium included a thrilling victory against French competitor Kenza in the fifth round, achieved through a strategic checkmate. However, the finals posed a formidable challenge as Sneha faced a Russian opponent, known for her strong chess skills. Despite a valiant effort, Sneha conceded in the fifth round, emphasizing the need for further chess training.

The second silver medal was from a other weight category of 60kg. She played in 7kgs more than her body weight.

Adding a special twist to the championship was the introduction of a new event called ChessBoxing Light. This event held particular significance for Sneha as the first round involved boxing, providing an advantage for the accomplished boxer. In a remarkable achievement, Sneha secured the gold medal in this event, showcasing her versatility in both disciplines.

Journey To Riccione Championship

The journey to participate in this prestigious tournament was no easy feat for Sneha. Without sponsors, she faced numerous challenges and had to persevere until the last day. Throughout the struggles, Sneha found unwavering support from her mother, Sandhya Waykar, and her brother, Sachin Waykar, who stood by her side, offering encouragement and motivation. Reflecting on her victory, Sneha expressed gratitude, stating, “This victory is a result of their support and belief in me.”

Acknowledging the crucial role of her trainers, Sneha extended her thanks to Sagar Shah and Aditya Roy from Chessbase India for providing valuable chess training that undoubtedly contributed to her success in the tournament.

About the Riccione, Italy Championship

Montu Das is the Chairmain of World Chess Boxing Organisation (WCBO). For the first time ever in a chessboxing event, all five continents were represented with Africa and Oceania making their first appearance in a WCBO event. In fact, Australia and Gambia made their entrance and represented, respectively, these continents. New nations competing were also Kyrgyzstan, Czech Republic and Canada; the latter, together with the USA represented the Americas. The continents more represented were, as usual, Europe (where chessboxing was born) and Asia (were these championships in tournament format were always held before, for four editions since 2017).

Organised by the Italian ChessBoxing Federation (FISP), sanctioned by the World Chess Boxing Organisation (WCBO), the Championships had the patronage of: Sport Valley Emilia-Romagna, the Municipality of Riccione, Panathlon International, FIDE (the world chess federation), IBA (International Boxing Association), ASI (Associazioni Sportive e Sociali Italiane), Italian Chess Federation, San Marino Chess Federation.
