“Building a bridge across Vasai creek was a challenging task because it is tidal in nature. The first bridge was opened for traffic in 1864,” mentions the late former WR General Manager Anoop Krishna Jhingron in his book β Western Railway Heritage β Traditions & Legend.
Later the girders and the foundation of the bridge became weak. Hence in 1927 at a distance of 120 feet from the old bridge, a new bridge was constructed. Then due to an increase in railway traffic, in 1990 another bridge was constructed.
Demolition of the bridge
This 156 year old bridge is decommissioned in 1983. The demolition of the bridge is started in November 2020 and likely to get completed by January 2021.
