“The Disciple” Marathi Movie Made India Proud At Venice

The Mumbai based director Chaitanya Tamhane’s Marathi movie “The Disciple” made India proud at the prestigious FIPRESCI award at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. It got an award for the best screenplay and it is the first Indian movie in 20 years to be chosen for the main competition of a European film festival.

About the Movie:
The movie is based on an Indian classical vocalist Sharad Nerulkar (Aditya Modak) who follows the teachings of his old masters, Guru and his father. But he wonders whether he can reach the excellence he is looking for. The movie is 127 minutes long starring Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, and Kiran Yadnyopavit.

“The Disciple” is the first Indian movie to be chosen for the main competition of a European film festival (Cannes, Venice, Berlin) 20 years after Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding in Venice in 2001.

Four-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron was serving as executive producer on the movie.
