The construction of Sassoon dock was initiated by David Sassoon & Co. It was headed by Albert-Abdullah Sassoon son of famous businessman David Sassoon. David was Jewish community leader and emigrant from Baghdad who ventured into commercial enterprise and made huge profits in Mumbai.
Albert had foreseen the importance of construction of the Suez Canal in 1869 and its influence on Mumbai harbor. So he bought land on the southern side of the Colaba for the construction of a dock. He knew that if safe anchorage could be provided for large ships and that if the dock was situated within easy reach of the cotton centre, the traffic to Bombay port would be greatly increased.
Sassoon dock was ambitious project which was started in 1872 and was finally finished in 1875.
