Transgender community gets their first public toilet in Mumbai located at Omble garden, Aarey in Goregaon east. The toilet was set up with the help of Saarthi foundation, an NGO working towards upliftment of the underprivileged in the health and education sector.

This community always had to face gender discrimination and it was difficult for them to enter either gents toilet or ladies toilet. So the making of such toilet assures them safe space.

STRUGGLE FOR BASIC FACILITIES
‘Kinnar’ Samaj is often neglected and looked down upon in society, marking an unending suffering for them. They are constantly fighting for their existence and basic rights, including the right to safe sanitation and hygiene.

Under the Supreme Court’s NALSA judgement and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights Act), 2019, there is a need to provide basic facilities for transgenders in the state, including the right to education, voting, Aadhar card.

Besides, they are also entitled to clean and safe toilets. Though some companies have introduced the concept of gender-neutral washrooms, it has not yet gone public.
