Colaba, Mumbai

Introduction

Colaba is one of Mumbai's most iconic and historic localities located at the southern tip of the city. It is famous for the Gateway of India, Colaba Causeway, heritage buildings, naval establishments, luxury hotels, museums and vibrant street shopping. Colaba serves as a major tourist destination and remains one of the most prestigious residential and commercial areas of Mumbai.

Historical Background

The name Colaba is derived from the word "Kolabhat", associated with the indigenous Koli fishing community. Historically, Colaba and Little Colaba were separate islands forming part of the original Seven Islands of Bombay. The British connected these islands to the mainland through the Colaba Causeway completed in 1838. During the colonial period, Colaba developed into an important military, commercial and residential district. The Colaba Observatory established in the 1820s played a significant role in meteorological and geomagnetic observations. Today, Colaba preserves much of Mumbai's colonial heritage and architectural charm.
