Kanhoji Angre – The Sarkhel (Admiral) of Maratha Navy

Kanhoji Angre was the brave Maratha warrior. At the age of 13 years, he entered the battlefield and never lost a single battle. The first Sarkhel (Admiral) of the Maratha Navy, this man loved and lived for the Indian Sea.

The terror of Kanhoji Angre was so immense that the Britishers build the fort wall around the town of Bombay to guard against him. That is why the name Fort, a famous place near Churchgate.

INS Angre

Due to several attacks by Kanhoji led Britisher to establish a small naval force that eventually became the modern Indian Navy. Today, a statue of Angre proudly stands in Indian Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. While the original fort built by Angre that overlooked the Naval Docks has vanished, its boundary wall is still intact and within it lays the Headquarters of Indian Western Naval Command and is called INS Angre (Indian Naval Station Angre).

Kolaba fort along with several other forts was given over to the Kanhoji Angre. He used it as his main base from which to launch raids on British ships. On 4 July 1729, Kanhoji Raje Angre died on the Kolaba fort.
