Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched 25 hybrid electric AC buses for Mumbai at an event at Sahyadri Guest House in Malabar Hill on Friday morning.

These AC buses, will cater to commuters in Bandra-Kurla complex and as far as Borivali, Thane and Kharghar. The fares will be a minimum Rs 15 and a maximum Rs 110 depending on distance. The buses are procured by MMRDA and will be operated by the BEST. Each bus costs around Rs 1.7 crore.

Below are the 10 Things must know about hybrid AC buses:

    • It is a 32-seater Tata Starbus hybrid-electric AC buses developed indigenously.
    • Newly designed with mobile charging points, digital displays, passenger announcement system, bucket seats, Wi-Fi and automatic fare collection system.
    • They have advanced lithium-ion phosphate batteries that get recharged while the engine is running.
    • The bucket-type seats will be equipped with integrated mobile charging points, head rests and more legroom.
    • Their electronic braking mechanism also generates power each time the driver hits the brake.
    • The sitting capacity of each bus will be 31 (plus one driver) while it will allow 28 standees.
    • The bus is economically viable, with improved 25-30% fuel savings.
      It has huge reduction in carbon emissions in comparison to conventional buses.
    • It will run on pure electric mode for around 30-35% of the total travel distance.
    • The five bus routes are Bandra Terminus-Diamond market, Kurla station-ACBL, Bandra bus station-CA Institute, Sion station-Kalanagar-BKC and Sion station-LBS road-BKC.
