In a major crackdown on food safety violations, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licenses of six prominent food establishments in Mumbai after raids uncovered serious hygiene lapses, expired food stock, pest infestation and regulatory violations.

The inspections were conducted between June 26 and June 28 under a special enforcement drive launched by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe to strengthen food safety compliance and curb violations across Maharashtra.

FDA officials reported alarming findings, including rats inside kitchens, heavy cockroach infestation, foul odour, leaking refrigerators, poor storage practices and expired food products.

Establishments Facing Action

  • Flint & Waarsa, Nariman Point (NCPA)
  • M.K. Bakery, Borivali East
  • Hotel Shree Krishna (Sujit Bar & Restaurant), Bhandup West
  • Hotel Gopal Krishna, Santacruz East
  • Karak Enterprises Pvt Ltd, Andheri East
  • Ace Clubs and Resorts Pvt Ltd (Madras Diaries), Bandra West

Major Violations Detected

At Flint & Waarsa during inspection on June 27, FDA officials found misbranded food products. Five food samples were collected for laboratory testing, products worth ₹11,350 were seized for incorrect labelling, and expired food worth ₹16,201 was destroyed on-site.

At M.K. Bakery, food production was found ongoing despite renovation work. The premises were also found to be unhygienic.

At Hotel Shree Krishna, inspectors noted poor hygiene, leaking refrigerators and lack of temperature display systems.

At Hotel Gopal Krishna, officials found a rat inside the premises, foul smell from the kitchen and garbage accumulation in drainage lines.

At Karak Enterprises, heavy cockroach infestation, peeling walls, absence of insect-proof mesh and poor refrigeration raised serious concerns.

At Madras Diaries, inspectors found non-compliance with hygiene standards and absence of mandatory food testing records and statutory documentation.

Strong Message to Mumbai’s Food Industry

The action has sent a strong warning to Mumbai’s hospitality sector.

With lakhs of Mumbaikars eating out or ordering food online daily, food safety has become a serious public health issue. Even premium and reputed establishments are not immune to violations.

The crackdown highlights a crucial reality—good ambience and premium branding do not always guarantee hygienic kitchens.

Unsafe food can lead to food poisoning, infections and serious health risks.

FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has made it clear that strict enforcement will continue against establishments violating food safety norms.

This action is not merely about suspending six licenses—it is a clear message that consumer health and food safety cannot be compromised in Mumbai.
