India Meteorological Department has announced monsoon withdrawal over whole country including Mumbai today on 28th October 2020. It is the most late withdrawal of monsoon till date.

As per IMD the withdrawal date of Mumbai is changed from 1st October to 10th October as per new data released this year. In the last few years, the withdrawal dates of monsoon are exceeding 20th October. In 2016 the withdrawal date was 26th October, in 2017 was on 24th October. The data for the past 10 years reveals that the withdrawal dates have surpassed the 10th of October.
In 2017, it was a rare event where monsoon was withdrawn post Diwali festival.
Below are some of the statistics of withdrawal dates from the period between 1960 to 2017:
The earliest of monsoon withdrawal: 23rd September 1963
The late monsoon withdrawal: 26th October 2016
Below is the dates showing the number of years in which monsoon withdrew:
- Before 30th September: 8 times
- Between 1st to 5th October: 11 times
- Between 6th to 10th October: 17 times
- Between 11th to 15th October: 16 times
- Between 16th to 26th October: 5 times
Hence it can be seen that the maximum number of withdrawal dates are between 6th to 15th October.
