In 1942 Quit India was the biggest movement for the freedom struggle in India. Mahatma Gandhi initiated the movement. During that time on 8th August 1942, Gandhiji gave the call for “Do or Die” at Gowalia tank.

Gandhiji said, “We shall either free India or die in the attempt, we shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery. Take the pledge, with God and your own conscience as your witness, that your will no longer rest till freedom is achieved and wlll be prepared to lay down your life in the attempt to achieve it.”

This call became a threat to the British Government. Then the orders were issued for Gandhiji’s arrest. After which all the working committee and 50 leading citizens of Bombay were arrested.

Police later used tear gas to disperse the large crowd which had gathered at Gowalia. Image source: MyNation.com
