Mumbai, along with the other coastal districts, is gearing up for a week of intense rainfall activity from the 15th to the 20th of August 2025. According to the latest bulletin dated 15th August 2025, from the Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, couple of weather systems are set to bring widespread and in some places, extremely heavy rainfall over Raigad.
Below are some of the weather systems influencing the increase in rainfall intensity:
Low-Pressure Area:
A low-pressure area has developed over the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts, and it’s expected to influence the weather over Maharashtra, including Mumbai. This system, along with an upper-air cyclonic circulation, is likely to intensify the rainfall activity across the state.
Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation:
An additional cyclonic circulation over the Northeast Arabian Sea near the coast of South Gujarat and Konkan is adding to the atmospheric instability, further increasing the chances of heavy rains.
East-West Trough:
An east-west trough running across Maharashtra from Gangetic West Bengal to the East-central Arabian Sea is also contributing to the heightened rainfall activity. This trough is expected to cause widespread, often intense rainfall over the region, especially over the Konkan and ghat areas.
Weather Over Mumbai:
Given the prevailing weather systems, Mumbai is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall starting from 16th August, with the intensity increasing over the next two days. An orange alert has been issued for 16th and 17th August, indicating that residents should be prepared for heavy rainfall that could disrupt daily activities, traffic, and cause localized flooding.
On 18th and 19th August, the city will continue to experience heavy rainfall, though the intensity may slightly reducing with a yellow alert.
