Mission Green Mumbai, a initiative started by NGO Green Yatra to plant 12000 coconut trees along the coast of Mumbai which include areas such as Juhu, Gorai, Versova, Aksa, Danapani and Manori. This task to be completed in next 6 months maximum. Dr Subhajit Mukherjee come up with this unique idea for increasing the green cover in Mumbai.
According to him “The government and other agencies have undertaken several plantation drives this year, but not much has been done to increase the green cover along the coastline. Hence, we decided to plant coconut trees along the west coast.” The drive started with planting of 60 saplings on a plot in Charkop village. With increase in response from the people, it is expected to plant 400 coconut trees on the same plot. More areas are being identified for plantation.
Appeal is being made to Citizens and their societies to adopt the saplings for planting them in their society premises. Dr Subhajit added the importance of Coconut tree saying, “Coconut trees have a long life and take almost eight to 10 years to bear fruits. Each tree will produce more than 100 coconuts and we expect to get 1,20,00,00 coconuts every year,”.
The cost of each sapling ranges from Rs 60 to Rs 200 depending on the size. Corporate companies too taking interest in this project and are coming forward.
