23rd March is celebrated worldwide as World Meteorological Day. This day is observed as commemoration of the World Meteorological Organization which was formed 23rd March 1950. This organization announces a slogan for World Meteorological Day every year and the theme for 2023 is – “At The Frontline Of the Climate Action”. But the event will be celebrated in IMD Colaba office on Friday, 22nd March being a working day.

Theme Background:

Each decade since the 1980s has been warmer than the previous one. 2023 was the hottest year on record, with the global mean temperature at about 1.45°C above the 1850-1900 average. This was largely due to a combination of human-induced climate change and El Niño, a naturally occurring phenomenon.

There is no time to lose in mitigating climate change. This means we have to make drastic reductions in greenhouse gases which trap heat in the atmosphere. An integral part of this is to phase out the use of polluting fossil fuels and switch to cleaner energy sources.

The Priorities are Cutting of CO2 and Clean energy.
