Mumbai a dream island was comprised of several small 7 islands that were formed due to volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago. The city has a fascinating history and today it has evolved as the financial capital of India and the popular city in the world.

3rd Century BC these islands came under Mauryan Emperor
200 B.C: Satvahanas enters into Kanheri area
1000 A. D.: Establishment of the temple at Walukeshwar and Ambernath during the Shilahar governance.
1100 A. D.: Mahikawati on Mahim Island has been established as a capital city by King Bhimrao
1401 A. D.: Sultan of Gujarat ruled over Mumbai.
1534 A. D.: Portuguese acquired the city of Mumbai from Muslim regime.
1661 A. D.: Portuguese hand over Mumbai Island to British Prince Charles as a gift dowry.
1347, the islands were under Islamic domination, initially by the Delhi sultanate and later by the Gujarat sultanate
1431 Haji Ali Dargah, built-in 1431 as the tomb of Muslim saint Haji Ali. Sultanate
1626 – The name of the island Bombay was first mentioned by John Viau in 1626.
1689 – Siddi the Mughal emperor attacked Mumbai on February 14, 1689
1686 and 1696 there was a severe outbreak of plague in Western India, which brought great havoc in Vasai, Thane and Chaul and adversely affected the population of Bombay
1697 – Severe storm which raged over Bombay from the 20th April to the 8th May 1697
1819 – Construction of the Wellington Pier (Apollo Bunder) which was opened for passenger traffic.
1822 and 1827 – The Elphinston High School and Elphinston College were founded respectively
1830 – on 20th March 1830, the Hugh Lindsay the first Mumbai-built steamship went to Suez.
1838 – The construction of the Colaba Causeway in 1838.
1838 – There were two bazaars in the Fort, the China and Thieves’ bazars, the latter crowded with warehouses where European articles were disposed off at a small profit.
1845 – The J.J. Hospital, constructed at a cost of Rs. 2 lakhs by Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy
1845 – The city’s swamps were completely filled in, and by 1845 the seven small islands that had previously made up Bombay had been turned into one large island.
1852 – Boribunder Railway station was built. There was a cluster of Bori trees at the Bunder (port) hence called Boribunder.
1853 – Saturday 16th of April, 1853 a 21-mile long railway line, the first in India, between Bombay’s Victoria Terminus and Thane was opened.
1854 – Railway extended upto Kalyan on 1st May 1854
1856 – The railway line from Kalyan to the foot of the Ghats at Khopoli was opened in May 1856
1856 – The first mill was established by Cowasji Davar with the help of 50 leading businessmen in the city.
1860 – The Port of Mumbai became the biggest cotton market in India.
1864, the Bombay Baroda and Central India (BCCI) railway connected Mumbai to Gujarat by constructing the one and a half-mile long bridge across the Bassein Creek which is in use even today.
1860-65 – The cotton boom of the growth of Bombay was enormously led to increasing in the cotton trade.
1873 – The formation of the Bombay Port Trust in June 1873.
1874 – The University Convocation hall was completed in November 1874.
1875 – Two hundred thousand square foot Sassoon Dock was ready to receive ships.
1878 – The clock tower later known as Rajabhai towers was completed in November 1878
1887 – Boribunder was renamed Victoria Terminus when the Central railway headquarters building was opened and due to the Golden Jubilee year of the coronation of Queen Victoria.
1900 – By this year, 45 trains of Western Railway in each direction were carrying over one million passengers annually.
1911 – King George V and Queen Mary visit Mumbai. Gateway of India is built to commemorate their arrival.
1912 – King George English School, Dadar was established, Now known as Raja Shivaji Vidyasankul, Dadar, Mumbai.
1913 – Sydenham College established. The First College of Commerce in Asia.
12 January 1915 – Gandhi returns to India from South Africa at Mumbai.
1920 – Half of Mumbai – Arthur road (Chinchpokli West) to Kalachawki (Cotton Green station), Sewri station- Bharatmata (Lalbaug) united in Chinchpokli to celebrate Ganesh Festival. People came from all over Mumbai to Chinchpokli for Ganesh Festival.
22 January 1926 – King Edward Memorial Hospital inaugurated.
15 July 1926 – First motorised bus ran between Afghan Church and Crawford Market.
1928 – The first electric train runs between Churchgate and Borivali.
1930 – Mumbai Cricket Association established.
15 October 1932 – J. R. D. Tata flew from Karachi to Mumbai via Ahmedabad landing on a grass strip at Juhu paving the way for civil aviation in India.
1934 – UDCT established. First institute dedicated to research in Chemical Engineering in India.
1940 – Begining of reclamation of land to form Nariman Point begins.
1942 – Quit India Movement declaration passed at Gowalia Tank Maidan on 8 August 1942
1958 – IIT Bombay established in Powai.
1960 – Mumbai becomes the capital of newly formed Marathi-state Maharashtra on 1 May 1960.
1964 – Last tram made its journey from Bori Bundar to Dadar on 31 March 1964.
1982 January – Great Bombay Textile Strike started by mill workers of Mumbai, under trade union leader Dutta Samant.
1992 – Over 2000 people killed in Hindu-Muslim communal riots following the Babri Masjid destruction between December 1992 – January 1993.
1993 – Serial bomb blasts across Mumbai, masterminded by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, kill 300 and injured hundreds more.
1995 – Bombay renamed Mumbai. Subsequently, University of Bombay renamed to University of Mumbai.
2005 – Serial Train bomb blast on western railway local trains.
2008 – Series of terrorist attacks that took place 26th – 29th November 2008, when 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terrorist organisation based in Pakistan, carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai.
2009 – Worli Sea link was opened on 30 June 2009.
2014 – Mumbai metro from Versova to Ghatkopar was launched on 8 June 2014.
2017 – India’s first ever Air-Conditioned EMU train on 25th December, 2017 on Mumbai Western Suburban section.
