BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had announced 20% water cut in the city in August due to less rainfall around lakes and dams supplying water to Mumbai. Drinking water levels with only around 30% till the end of July 2020 was a worrying situation for Mumbaikars.
It was the right time that August 2020 rainfall recorded 2nd highest monthly total rainfall. It was recorded 1248 mm. This rainfall helped to fill the lakes/dams upto 95%. As compared to the last year 2019, the lakes and dams were already overflowing by July end.
The August 2020 rainfall was just 6 mm short of the highest one in the year 1958 which recorded 1254 mm. There were a number of days with heavy spells. The highest rainfall recorded was 332 mm in Colaba on 5th August while Santacruz recorded 269 mm on 3rd August 2020.
