Mumba devi a famous local goddess of Mumbai. It is the oldest temple which is now situated near Zaveri Bazaar, Bhuleshwar.
In the temple one can see the Goddess Mumbadevi wearing golden necklace dressed with a silver crown and a nose stud. A stone figure of Annapurna seated on a peacock can be seen to her left and a tiger the carrier of the Goddess, in front of the shrine.
History:
In 15th century Kolis of Gujarat came on this seven islands and settled here. Along with them they brought their Goddess named “Mumai” (yes read it right “Mumai”). Hence the Mumba was derived from the word Mumai and now known as Mumba Devi and city name as “Mumbai”.
Initially the temple was first located at Bori Bunder. The temple was destroyed around 1737. A new temple was later erected at Bhuleshwar.
