Mani Bhavan – Exploring Mahatma Gandhi

Mani Bhavan was one of his houses where Mahatma Gandhi spent time and origin of various movements such as Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi and Khilafat movement. The museum is representation of Gandhiji’s life year by year, with the help of small statues from the beginning until his death. A representation gives more realistic spectacle of about how he was living. It gives a very touching and cultural experience.It is a memorial which houses a library, picture gallery and a memorabilla.

Significance of Mani Bhavan
It was Gandhiji’s centre of various political activities between the years 1917 and 1934, like Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi and Khilafat movement.

1) It is a place where in 1921 Mahatma Gandhi did four-day fast to restore peace in Mumbai.
2) Mahatma Gandhiji started his association with ‘charkha’ or spinning wheel in Mani Bhavan.
3) Mani Bhavan houses a Research Institute of Gandhian thought and Rural Development for post graduate students.
4) One can reference or borrow from a research library with 20,000 books, periodicals and recording archive on Mahatma Gandhi and the associated subjects.

Major Attractions
In an auditorium on the first floor of the building, Gandhiji films are displayed and recordings of his speeches are played. Seminars, discussions and competitions for schools and colleges are also conducted in the auditorium.

On the second floor of the building, a room, which was used by Mahatma Gandhi as his living room and working space, have been maintained.

The other rooms display Gandhiji’s political life and the freedom struggle of India through small figures, have picture galleries which include photographs, posters, slogans, and other items like the Gandhiji’s Charkha (spinning wheel).

On the terrace, there is a bronze inscription indicating Gandhiji arrest on January 1932. You can buy Gandhi postage stamps, Gandhian literature, photographs, statues, and medallions at the museum.
